One in three women will experience some form of urinary leakage related to pelvic floor dysfunction. Sadly many accept this as a normal part of being a woman. Women’s health physio is a specific area of physiotherapy dedicated to issues related to pelvic floor dysfunction and its effect on women. A women’s health physio has undertaken post graduate training in diagnosis and treatment of pelvic floor dysfunction using a range of assessment and treatment techniques including real time ultrasound.
The pelvic floor muscles assist in stabilising the pelvis and lumbar spine, support and control the bladder and bowel and play a role in sexual function. Pregnancy and childbirth, constipation and straining, chronic cough, menopause, inactivity, pelvic surgery, obesity and aging can all have a negative impact on the pelvic floor, reducing its ability to contract effectively. This may lead to a range of problems including bladder and bowel symptoms, prolapse and pelvic pain.
At In Balance Physio and Pilates, our women’s health physios are able to assist you with:
- Urinary incontinence or poor bladder control
- Bowel incontinence and constipation
- Over active bladder and urge incontinence
